The Souls and Shadows Foundation is a charitable trust set up in March 2007 in memory of Caspar Barlow-Olsen who died in December 2006 from an inoperable brain tumour aged just 33 . When he died Caspar left a widow of 32 and a baby daughter of 15 months but during his illness he had had music therapy at Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice, Oxford and during these sessions he recorded a CD of his songs as a legacy to his family.  Caspar benefited tremendously from his music therapy and it was his wish that  the Souls and Shadows Foundation be set up to promote and provide music therapy to other terminally patients with particular emphasis on composition and song writing to help relieve their pain and suffering.  His hope was that they could benefit in the way that he did. Although this obviously applies to terminally ill patients and their families before bereavement where appropriate music therapy is also available to surviving family and friends after bereavement.
To date we have supported thirteen hospices, ten with the provision of recording equipment or software for use in music therapy sessions and another three with £4950 combined to fund music therapy for their patients.
In addition, when suitable candidates present themselves the foundation provides bursaries to students/music therapists for education and training in the use of song writing as music therapy. So far we have provided over £1500 in fees for song writing courses.
Our focus is primarily in the United Kingdom and Denmark. Early in 2011 we are funded a song writing course for Danish music therapists at Vejle, a hospice near Arhus.

If you are terminally ill and feel that you and your family could benefit from Music Therapy please contact us.

Alternatively, if you are a music therapist working with terminally ill patients but need funding for training or equipment to help with song writing /composition/ recording -we may be able to help.  References and validation of your work will however be required.

As Caspar Barlow-Olsen once said of music therapy  'Among other things music therapy has opened my eyes to the fact that in the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary'.
During the fifteen months of his illness Caspar always looked forward to his music sessions with Bob Heath, the music therapist at Sobell House, and just the thought of going to a session lifted his spirits remarkably.   Music therapy enabled Caspar to express his emotions through music and, in particular, song writing.

Verse 1
Who decides - when times are sad
And who decides - what times are glad
Should it all - feel dark and grey
With memories - that fade away
Verse 2
You may think - when passing by
I'm up above - or in the sky
Please don't be fooled - let's just say
I'll be with you - all of the way
Chorus
We are souls and shadows
Souls and shadows
You, me and Liva
That will never change

We are souls and shadows
Souls and shadows
You, me and Liva
Will always remain
Verse 3
So now you hear - I hope this song
Has found it's place - where it belongs
If I hear - you sing along
Then you have found - where I belong
Chorus
Bridge
Should we accept without conditions
Should we accept not knowing why
Too many tears - too many questions
What will give us peace of mind
Verse 4
Close your eyes - and let us try
Please speak up - don't be shy
I'm asking you - to be the one
Who leaves a smile - and a bit of sun
Chorus
